Mold Prevention Tips

July 12, 2018

Mold growth is unsightly, destructive to your home and property and is often dangerous to your health. Mold proliferates in almost any climate, including humid, tropical and subtropical climates, as well as temperate inland climates. Coastal areas, particularly those in the American Northwest, are especially vulnerable to mold growth. Because the Great Lakes mimic coastal climate patterns in a number of ways, mold proliferation throughout the Great Lakes region is common, especially in the fall.

If you believe that you have a mold problem in your home, you should schedule a mold inspection in Buffalo, NY as soon as possible. Because mold can be a health and safety risk, it’s important to identify the type of mold growing in your home and remove it as quickly as possible. Failure to do so could cause long-term damage to your home or your health.

Thankfully, there are a number of steps that you can take to prevent the spread of mold in your home. Here are just a few ways that you can stop mold proliferation in its tracks:

  • Identify and address problem places:
Chances are, there are a few specific areas in your home that are most susceptible to mold proliferation. In most homes, these problematic areas are located in the kitchen and bathroom. Mold often grows behind the toilet, or behind the refrigerator in your kitchen. If you identify mold growth, call for help. Regular household cleaners, like bleach, may actually spread the mold further.
  • Keep it dry:
It’s important to keep your home as dry as possible in order to prevent the proliferation of mold growth. This means that you should never let water stand on the floor. If condensation regularly forms on certain walls or sets of piping, you need to increase airflow in that area to prevent mold from growing. Mold can thrive virtually anywhere that is damp with some regularity.
  • Let the air move:
Airflow is one of the most significant tools that you can use to fight against mold proliferation. You should ensure that your home’s ventilation system is working correctly, and that it’s regularly cleaned by a qualified professional. Additionally, you need to be sure to replace your home’s air filter as directed by your ventilation expert.
  • Monitor indoor humidity:
Especially in the summertime, indoor humidity can skyrocket. The lack of fresh airflow and rapidly rising indoor humidity creates the perfect environment for fast mold growth. Keeping indoor humidity at bay, however, is a relatively easy task. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends keeping indoor humidity levels between 30 percent and 60 percent. Most air conditioning systems automatically reduce ambient humidity.
